Holland HC Signature Frame Set (Entry for: Best Layup):
Holland HC Signature Frame Set

The goal: maximum lateral stiffness for climbing and sprinting, and maximum vertical compliance for comfort. Two years and six prototype frames road tested over thousands of miles, lab tested (read tortured) hundreds of thousands of cycles, molds scraped and tears shed, and finally we offer the Holland HC Signature.

This fully customizable carbon road frame utilizes bladder molded carbon components and lugged construction to deliver the highest degree of individualization, exceptional performance and unrivaled comfort. Individual components of the frame can vary in layup and material selection based on each rider's requirements.

The Holland HC Signature features include full titanium dropouts for the ultimate in durability and shifting performance. The asymmetric chain stays offer clearance for 28c tires and maximum clearance between frame and inner chain ring to minimize chain suck.
Its seat stay is wide for stiffness, yet just eleven millimeters thick. Acting like a leaf spring, it contributes significant compliance. The top tube and seat tube are tapered from larger cross sections at the BB and head area, to much smaller cross sections at the seat lug area. Combined with the leaf spring like seat stay, tests prove that the seat lug can slightly rotate under compression from road irregularities, providing noticeable shock absorption. The exceptional comfort at the “top end”, allows us to increase the stiffness of the down tube and chain stay which increases performance in climbing, sprinting, and descending.

The choice of bladder molded rather than the less expensive round, roll wrapped tubes means individual tubes can be locally reinforced and/or tuned by adding material only where it is needed. Tubes can be shaped to maximize performance and comfort. In the case of the seat tube, for example, it is reinforced internally in the area of the front derailleur band clamp as well as water bottle bosses.

By choosing lugged construction, the HC Signature's geometry is virtually unrestricted. For each frame we select from multiple molds for bottom bracket, head and seat lug, which are then machined to precise angles in our CNC mill. In addition to affording the ultimate in custom fit, lugged construction results in added vibration damping relative to other carbon construction methods, as the bonding layer interrupts frequencies that could otherwise travel continuously through the frame, a phenomenon called constrained layer damping.

For this build we chose Dura Ace Di2 components, which we feel represent the best balance of performance and reliability. Wheels are hand built in house; we selected Enve Smart 2.2 rims for their excellent ride quality and stiffness/weight ratio. The choice of Praxis works bottom bracket ensures a smooth, quiet ride.

A remarkable road bike is the result. Stiff in the way cyclists dream; repeatedly we hear “like it has an extra gear.” Smooth, quiet, and comfortable to a degree thought unattainable in a carbon bike. We call it “HC.”
