ANNOUNCING CARL STRONG SEMINAR

The Business of Professional Framebuilding

Presented by Carl and Loretta Strong of Strong Frames Inc. www.strongframes.com

We always hear people say, “Don’t quit your day job.” Well this seminar covers the things a builder needs to know in order to run a successful frame building business so they CAN quit their day job. Building frames is only a small part of running a successful Framebuilding business. If you want to build frames for a living you have to be equally as good at running the day to day operations of a small business. As Framebuilding grows in popularity and more builders enter the fray it will become even more important that you follow sound, professional, ethical and effective business practices. Topics will range from start up strategy and business models to necessary skill-sets and specific areas of focus like organization, time management, accounting, marketing, sales, customer management and fulfillment.

Q&A WITH NAHBS 2015 “BEST ROAD BIKE” WINNER MIKOLAS VOVERKA OF REPETE CYCLES
Screen Shot 2015-09-24 at 10.23.00 AM

  1. Please introduce yourself (incl. name, position/title) and tell us about your business (incl. location/year founded).

We’re a frame building company based in Prague, Czech Republic called REPETE cycles. We’re two guys Mikolas Voverka (me) and my colleague Robin Fiser. We’ve established REPETE cycles in 2012. Basically what we do is modern steel frames. Our goal is to make the most modern and advanced steel frames on the market but still keep the spirit and cherish the traditional craftsmanship.

  1. How long have you been building bikes/frames? How did you get your start in the industry?

We’ve been building bikes/frames as REPETE since 2012. We’ve been collecting vintage bikes and after some time we decided that we wanted to continue this tradition and become framebuilders as well. We’ve been building frames ever since.

  1. When you are not building bikes, what are you doing?

Biking and drinking beer :)

  1. How long have you been attending NAHBS? Do you plan to attend/exhibit at NAHBS 2016?

The last show in Kentucky was actually our first show ever and yes, we’re definitely attending next year’s show in Sacramento.

  1. Are you planning to participate in the awards this year? If so, would you like to share a little about the bike/frame you plan to present? Any specific division/or award you have your sights on?

We’re definitely participating. What I can say is we’re going to bring modern elements to the “new age steel” bikes. We would like to defend last year’s best road bike award.

  1. Can you comment on the creativity, talent, and artisanal nature of the builders and bikes at NAHBS 2015? Do you expect to see even more ingenuity, skill, and craft this February?

It was so cool to see how many amazing bikes you can see at one show. Pretty sure Sacramento is going to be even better.

  1. NAHBS is more than just a bike show. It is a gathering, the largest and most widely accessible destination, for frame builders to share their passion with cycling enthusiasts and supporters. In your opinion, what is it about NAHBS that truly sets it apart from other bicycle shows?

As foreigners we mainly admire the passion and appreciation of handmade bikes which we don’t see much in the Czech Republic. It’s just great to see that the handmade movement is spreading.

  1. What about NAHBS 2015 did you enjoy the most? What are you looking forward to in Sacramento at NAHBS 2016?

Meeting people that appreciate your effort. Meeting even more great makers.

  1. So awesome that you traveled all the way from Prague! How did you first hear about NAHBS? How does NAHBS compare to bike shows and events in the Czech Republic?

This show is something completely different from shows in our country. The custom bike scene is very little in our country so all the shows are pretty much only about mass produced bikes. It’s simple when doing research about custom handmade bikes it always leads you to NAHBS. Ever since we’ve decided to make our own frame it was always a goal to one day present them at NAHBS.

  1. Can you tell us about the Czech tradition of engineering and craft?

Czech Republic has a huge tradition in engineering in general. In between WW1 and WW2 (at that time) Czechoslovakia was in the top ten of most important countries in the field of engineering.2016 EXHIBITOR SPOTLIGHT

Sean Walling, Soulcraft

I have been working in frame shops for 27 years –  beginning in Petaluma at Bruce Gordon Cycles and Salsa Cycles. In 1999 I founded Soulcraft.

At Soulcraft, we focus on the bike as a means to an end, that being your experience while riding.  We ask customers to think about their favorite rides and how they want their bike to perform.  Hopefully they end up not paying much attention to the bike and instead focus on enjoying the ride.

We pride ourselves on good rider fit and craftsmanship.  We like people to be impressed with the quality and finish, but our real goal is for people to forget about those things after they ride the bike.

Using steel only, we build all types of bikes but recently have focused our efforts on the Dirtbomb model, a cross bike that takes 45c tires and compact road cranks.  People are coming around to the type of riding that mixes long days of pavement and dirt, with overnighters thrown in now and then. The Dirtbomb is perfect for that.

We are very excited that NAHBS is coming back to Sacramento. All the NorCal builders will be there so we’re stoked to represent and help uphold the reputation of the great bikes that come from this area.
